Things To See & Do In Canterbury, Kent
Britain is the most popular trip destinations in all of Europe. One of the principal reasons for this astonishing reputation is the extremely good checklist containing an enormous number of top class points of interest and engaging cities steeped in history. The history of England is full of important events which have had an effect on virtually everybody as not too long ago many parts of the world where ruled by the British. With the expansion of the British Empire numerous missionaries spread Christianity. Religion has shaped England and one place which has played a role in this is the city of Canterbury.
Tourist Attractions In Canterbury
The city of Canterbury is a medieval settlement in Kent positioned on the banks of the River Stour. This immensely picturesque city is the ecclesiastical capital of the country and it has been for an extremely long time. Because of this the city features a multitude of prestigious religious buildings, the greatest of which is Canterbury Cathedral.
Canterbury Cathedral is most famous for Becket's murder however the structure was founded in 597 A.D. and has an eventful and long history. Following Becket's death many miracles were said to have taken place and a shrine was constructed which soon became a place of pilgrimage. Unfortunately it is no longer possible to see the shrine because King Henry VIII had it destroyed however the cathedral remains a place of pilgrimage for large numbers of folk.
The town's most visited museum is The Canterbury Tales. The museum demonstrates, through medieval tableaux, the pilgrimages of Chaucerian England. Chaucer wrote the immensely popular Canterbury Tales which describes the pilgrimages of five individuals. Audiovisual aids are used to bring the characters to life over three quarters of an hour.
The Canterbury Heritage Museum of the City (now called the Museum of Canterbury) is a further well visited museum. Located in the ancient Poor Priest's Hospital this highly interesting museum exhibits the town's history. Utilising state-of-the-art technology, including holographic imagery, the museum depicts periods from the Vikings to the Blitz.
The Roman Museum is an unusual museum in that it is below street level. Using real archaeological sites the museum brings to life the Roman era through interactive computers. This is your opportunity to see with your own eyes a Roman house with patterned mosaics.
Of course the town has many more visitor attractions, far too many to discuss here. The nighlife would merit another article. In the above article I only introduce a few however I would hope that this has generated an interest with the town and maybe you would consider spending some time there soon.
