Starcraft 2 Tips And Hints For Terran Scouting
In Starcraft 2, scouting is a key component of a winning strategy. Scouting your opponent lets you to find out what kind of units and buildings he is producing, their location, and their quantity. This will allow you to understand his game strategy and retaliate with a winning strategy.
Terrans have a particular scouting capability that the Protoss and Zerg races do not - the Terrans are the only race with the skill to scout an foe without risking any troops. By using Scanner Sweep, Terran's can scout a sizeable segment of the map and reveal any buildings or troops in that area - even hidden ones. Terran's can use this capability at any time and on any segment of the map.
This doesn't mean you should only use Scanner Sweep as a Terran - it's important to also use your troops and buildings when you spy on your opponent. SCV units, Reapers, Vikings and Hellions can all make excellent scouts at certain times within the battle. Make sure to check out this SC2 guide that has unbelievable scouting strategies (and much more), take a look at this unique In Game Addon for Starcraft 2 that will raise your game to another level.
Terran Scouting Tips - Early Game
The SCV Unit that built and completed your first Supply Depot is a prime unit to scout with. SCV units 12 or 13 can also usually be used for scouting, if you've picked out the right battle options at the start of the game. Games with an unknown opponent race or bigger maps mean you usually should begin scouting earlier than games with smaller maps.
If you're playing against Protoss and they seem to have a lot of soldiers but not many Pylons, chances are you've missed some of them and should do a more thorough check. They probably have undiscovered Pylons and other tech buildings in out of the way places that you have yet to scout. When battling against the Protoss, be certain to recall that if you uncover a Forge, a Cannon Rush or Void Ray strategy is what you should prepare for. Two gateways is a sign that you'll most likely be defending against a Zealot Rush or Robotics Bay.
When opposing the Zerg, if you uncover a Spawning Pool then your adversary is probably trying a 6-8 Pool rush. If you find Zerg Hatcheries early on, your opponent is probably spawning either Mutalisks or Hydras, or may be preparing for a large scare Roach attack. Building barracks or factories and flying them over your foe can help you discover tons of information about your competitor buildings and troops, including locations, number of and type of each. In addition to using buildings to scout, at this point in the battle you should also start to use some other units in addition to SCVs to scout with.
- Hellions have great speed and can do significant of damage against light units. The are also cheaper than a Reaper.
- Reapers are also fast and can jump off of cliffs.
- Vikings can fly above the adversary and are really good for scouting and harassing your opponent.
