The Russian toy Terrier, is now known as the Russian Toy Dog. The breed dates back to 19th century Russia.
Originally, the Victorian Era Russians became enamoured with everything English. Several small Black and Tan terriers, known now as the Manchester Terrier, were imported. The Russians selectively breed the imports to a very small size. Some breeders have theorized that they were crossed with the Continental Toy Spaniel (the breed used to create the Papillon). It became a symbol of the elite and most upper class ladies were really seen without one of these small dogs.
With the Revolution in Russia the breed almost became extinct. Were it not for a handful of dedicated breeders the breed would not exist today.
The breed is relatively unheard of outside of Russian and has only a small population outside of it's native homeland.
They are delightful to own. While they are smart, like the Papillon, they are much more stubborn. They can be somewhat snippy with children and can easily take control of a house without the proper training.
