Discover Swedish Art On A City Break To Stockholm
Sweden is rich in artistic talent and has a proud cultural heritage. There’s nothing better than discovering this wealth of talent on a lazy city break to the country’s capital – Stockholm, host to a selection of art galleries, which are perfect to lose yourself in for hours at a time. You probably can't fit every art institution in your trip but make sure you visit the following:
The National Museum of Fine Art, Stockholm
Make sure you visit the largest of Sweden's art galleries with this choice. It might be worth considering a weekend city break just because of the sheer scope of this museum – it’s going to take you a while to get round it all.
The building is an artwork in itself, with a truly striking architectural design, which was influenced by Florentine and Venetian Renaissance buildings. Degas and Gauguin and the Swedish masters Anders Zorn and Carl Larsson, Rembrandt, Rubens, Boucher and Renoir are just some of the incredible artists exhibiting here. With three floors, all packed full of things to look at, it might be quite easy to get lost. Investing in a guidebook will help you to make your way through the labyrinth of art and starting on the ground floor; you’ll find the café and shop, as well as an ever-changing exhibition. Visit the first floor for a wide range of items which belonged to the Swedish royalty, including beds and dresses. The second floor is the most striking however, with an amazing range of European and Mediterranean sculptures coupled with sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Russian icons.
The Swedish Art Association, also known as Skånes konstförening is where you can really get to known the local art talent from Sweden. Founded in 1904, the association holds up to 10 exhibitions a year, to showcase and support up-and-coming to more established artists. Some of the more famous artists that have been shown in the past are Matisse, Picasso and Warhol, which can all be enjoyed in the flesh. The link between the public and the art on display through the association is strong, thanks to it's member support and location in the Norrmalm area of Stockholm.
For free and inspirational local art, you can't go wrong with a visit to any of Stockholm's Metro stations. You'll find a museum at every stations with art from 1950s onwards including reliefs, inscriptions, installations, paintings, mosaics and sculptures.
It all came about because the Government had been trying to bring art to the people and thought of this creative way to present it. Hundreds of artist's work now adorns the walls of the station. In the Kungsträdgården subway station, the art resembles an archaeological excavation, with the remains of the old Stockholm Makalös palace. Where Östermalmstorg the artist Siri Derkert highlights women's rights and peace and environmental issues.
No doubt that a city break to Stockholm will inspire and satiate your desire for incredible art. Whether you prefer traditional art by local Swedish artists, or more modern art by expressionists, there's something here for everyone. There are a large number of art galleries across the city, which will keep you entertained that you could spend the whole time just visiting them.
