The Consulate General of Mexico in Raleigh, North Carolina, in partnership with Rafael Osuba, is organizing a Literary Gathering with the Mexican writer Jorge F. Hernández on June 9th 2011.
Jorge F. Hernández is a PhD in History from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and has taught in prestigious universities in Mexico City. His career as a writer includes essays, short stories, articles and novels. His novels "La Emperatriz de Lavapiés" (The Empress of Lavapiés) (Alfaguara, 1999) and "Réquiem para un Ángel" (Requiem for an Angel) (Alfaguara, 2009) have become very popular among the Spanish speaking public in Iberoamerica and the United States.
He recently published a compilation of short stories that has been translated into English (Chosen by the National Endowment For The Arts "The Big Read") entitled "Sun, Stone and Shadows: 20 Great Mexican Short Stories", represents a sample of the best Mexican short stories published during the first half of the 20th century featuring some of the most important writers of Hispanic literature.
"Perhaps literature is the best lens through which to observe Mexico's soul and of all genres, perhaps the short story is the vehicle best suited for rendering snapshot scenes, actual places, words that have been shared by generations or forgotten by time, and above, all, flesh-and-blood portraits of Mexicans that are perfectly credible—even when they're no more than inventions of ink on paper—whose biographies are eternal, precisely because they've been read." states Hernández.
This masterpiece brings together stories written by well known authors such as the 1990 Literary Nobel Prize Winner Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, Juan José Arreola and Rosario Castellanos. It has been increasingly selected by Universities to teach Hispanic Literature.
Jorge F. Hernandez will be reading part of his work and signing his books. A mixer will be followed suit for a more informal conversation with the author. The event will take place at the main facilities of the Consulate General of Mexico (336 E Six Forks Rd. Raleigh, NC 27609) on Thursday, June 9th , 2011 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

The Consulate General of Mexico in Raleigh, North Carolina, opened in November 2000. It covers the states of North Carolina and South Carolina.
