How To Sell Your Motorcycle On EBay
So, it's time to sell your motorcycle. You, like millions of others, are turning to the web to market your motorcycle. There are many different sites that can do this for you , whether it’s eBay motors, Gumtree or Autotrader. It doesn't matter what site you use, the same rules apply when it comes to advertising your bike and this guide will take you through them.
Take Appealing Photographs
With an online motorcycle advertisement, think of the main motorcycle photo as the 'first impression'. And remember, you only have one chance at it! Most websites have the functionality of allowing you to upload multiple photos. This means you can indulge your creative side and take shots from various angles. Here are a few tips for taking photos of your bike
- Wash your bike thoroughly before you take the photographs. You don't want the mud stains around the body to be highlighted!
- Take pictures from various angles. Straight on, angles and exterior shots should all be considered and included if possible. A sweet engine shot can often seal the deal. You may actually want to get an engine shampoo before you take that picture.
Pictures that highlight luxury or even quirky trim as well as mods can tip the balance in your favour. If you put in a thousand dollar aftermarket exhaust system and are selling that with the motorcycle, take a picture of it. This adds to the value of the bike and will obviously help you to reach your asking price. Your photographs should highlight any special features that the bike might have.
- Understand your light source and take your pictures in a well lit environment. Don't take night pictures of your bike, or pictures that show your bike covered in snow or mud. Don't have the light source directly behind the bike - this can distort the image or cause blurriness.
- Use a subtle background for the pictures of the bike. Don't have the bike in the foreground and a parade in the background - this takes the attention and focus away from the motorbike.
Write an ad That Sells Your Bike
Yes, a picture can say a thousand words, but great writing and selling copy can really help. A few enticing 'call to action' statements like 'priced to sell' or 'call now, before it's too late' can all work wonders. Here are some tips for how to write the best selling copy for your motorcycle:
- Always list the basic features of the motorcycle. There are some pieces of information that almost all buyers will be looking for, like year, make, model, price, and mileage. You may also want to mention if you are the original owner, and may want to list some details on the history and condition of the bike.
- Avoid jargon and rely on simple words. A classic mistake is trying to hard in the bikes description and giving away too much detail - this will often make you come across as desperate which of course will have an impact on the price. The written description should come across as convincing - not pleading.
If you are going to include accessories like a helmet, leathers or gloves make sure you include this in the description. It could be a great selling point.
- TELL THE TRUTH! It is not uncommon for buyers to travel long distances to see the motorbike they want to buy in person. Always avoid misrepresenting both yourself and the bike you are selling. Everyone who buys a bike will want to see it in person, so exaggerating its condition is simply a waste of time. Honesty will pay and you will be rewarded with a fair price from your potential buyers.
- Give your bike a fair price. Don't over price your bike - there are simply too many resources these days for you to be able to squeeze a lot more out of it than it is actually worth. Whatever you do, do not convey any desperation to sell your bike. Price will nearly always be the main attraction and a competitively priced bike will get snapped up quickly. But beware, too low a price will send alarm bells ringing for many customers who are wary of potential scams.
- Describe its reliability. If your motorcycle has been good to you, let people know. Let buyers know if the bike has passed a safety or emissions test recently. Reliability, especially with used bikes, is what people are often looking for most.
Offer reliable contact/personal information
This may seem like a total no-brainer, but so often people use an email address that they never check or a mobile phone number where the phone is always off. How can you sell your bike if people can't get in touch with you? Make your personal information readily available to potential buyers. If you are unable to respond immediately, state this early on and when you do get a chance, respond asap. Buyers are always on the hunt for a good deal. The worst thing that can happen is when a buyer is set on buying your bike but gives up because you are unable to answer any questions they may have!
If you employ the above tactics there should be nothing stopping you from making a great sale.
Once you have the sale lined up make sure you organise the bike transport (trasporto moto or transporte de motos as the Italians and Spanish would say) if the buyer is not picking it up personally.
