The history of online bingo
Each week, players in their thousands log on to Bucky Bingo and partake in one of the plentiful games of online bingo to choose from. But were you aware that bingo was invented in Italy? Or that it was originally called 'beano'? Well, read on to discover more about the exciting and entertaining game we call online bingo.
A brief history of bingo
Long ago in 1530, something incredible happened. While the century may be famous for Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa or for the Spanish colonisation of South America, perhaps the biggest event - at least for online bingo fans - was the launch of an Italian lottery called 'Lo Guioco del Lotto D'Italia'.
This Italian Lottery was played each Saturday evening – it still is even today – where participants would gather round and tick off numbers which were announced by a ye olde bingo caller. From Italy, this lottery game travelled around the continent - first to France and later to Germany. Of course, this game wasn't known as bingo, but beano!
Believe it or not, the name bingo was actually invented by an American. In 1929, a toy salesman named Edwin S. Lowe coined the phrase bingo while watching a game in action at a carnival in Georgia. After paying someone to design the bingo cards, this good man began introducing bingo to the people of the USA.
The rest, as they say, is history
