Definition Of A Cytokine Storm
Illness is best defended against by maintaining a strong immune system. Some sickness can cause your immune system to become your enemy. This is known as a Cytokine Storm.
CYTOKINE STORM DEFINED
Messengers in your body that regulate your immune response to sickness are called cytokines. A Cytokine Storm occurs when the immune response is over stimulated by too many cytokines in response to a pathogen invader.
Cytokine Storms can cause great physical harm. Symptoms of a Cytokine Storm include redness, inflammation, high fever, nausea and weakness. If the storm is located in the lungs, the combination of overwhelming mucus and inflammation could block airways and cause death. Many believe that the Cytokine Storm response was what caused the deaths of so many young adults in the 1918 Influenza Pandemic.
DON’T TRY TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM DURING A CYTOKINE STORM
At the first sign of serious viral infection, herbs and foods which boost the immune response should be avoided. These include herbs such as Echinacea, Elderberry, Pau d’arco, Aloe Vera, and Oregano which offer temporary relief followed by more severe symptoms. Some foods such as Chocolate, Kimchi, Chlorella Algae, Spirulina and Elderberry Juice (Sambucol) will also increase the production of cytokines and should be avoided during a Cytokine Storm. These foods are good for treatment of less severe colds and flu, but should be avoided when symptoms become severe.
FIGHT PATHOGENS WITH ANTI-VIRALS
Include herbs which are classified as anti-viral or antipathogenic in order to fight back severe viral infections. Apple Cider vinegar, Eucalyptus (inhaled), Garlic, Ginger, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Mullein and Pine needles are helpful in this application.
USE IMMUNOMODULATORS TO HELP BALANCE IMMUNE RESPONSE
Foods and herbs classified as immunomodulators should be selected for use. These help to balance the immune system and bring the immune response back into normal parameters. Olive Leaf Extract, Chamomile and Ginseng fall into this category.
TREAT THE SYMPTOMS
Anti-inflammatories help lessen the symptoms of excess mucus and inflammation that occur in some Cytokine Storms. A list of helpful anti-inflammatories includes: Yarrow, Red Clover, Pleurisy Root, Pine Needles, Plantain, Onions, Mustard, Mullein, Marshmallow, Ginger, Curcumin (from Turmeric), Apple Cider Vinegar and Eucalyptus (inhaled).
REMEDIES
Most of these herbs can be administered in an herbal tea or in tincture form. Inhaling the steam of herbs and/or Apple Cider Vinegar simmering in water is another way to receive the beneficial properties of herbs. Mustard and onions can be applied via a plaster to the chest. It is also possible to deliver the benefits of onions in a soup. By smouldering the herbs as incense, their essential oils can be carried by the smoke into the air and inhaled into the lungs.
Lots of liquids and rest will also help as the patient recuperates. Monitor symptoms closely and seek additional help at the first sign of a life-threatening condition.
