How to open this "Word" file properly?

Have recently downloaded an e-book in a zip file. Opened it, and saw a "Word" document inside (so the e-book was in the "Word"), but when I opened that "Word" document, I saw only Chinese characters mixed with Russian letters. It is like a wrong-coding problem that you often get while surfing the internet, which is easily solved by switching to the right coding. But here I am dealing with a downloaded "Word" document (not a web-page). What should I do in order to display this "Word" file properly?

the document may be in an earlier version of word. try this...download the word viewer 2003...it is what i had to do even though i already have word installed on my computer.

it may also be that, the file type was set to open in Word by default...try changing it, and/or the extention.
