The Aimpoint 3XMag Magnfier

Since 1975, Aimpoint has dominated the world of red dot sights. The US Army wanted the best combat optic money could buy for its troops and got it in the Aimpoint CompM2 which it type classified and bought in huge numbers as the M68 CCO. The Army soon found its marksmanship scores increasing and its soldiers becoming more effective in the kind of CQB scenarios that were commonplace in Iraq. After a few years the US Army looked to replace its M68s with a sight that combined the best features of the CompM2 with some desired changes. The first thing to go was the scarce and expensive N cell battery, replaced by the ubiquitous AA. Secondly, they wanted a sight that didn't mount in a ring where it could rotate with respect to the weapon, throwing shots off target. Lastly, the red dot brightness adjuster knob's relative fragility had proven the Achillies heel of the original M68. Aimpoint themselves had been working hard to make improvements and had vastly increased the battery life of the old CompM2 to no less than 8 years, resulting in the CompM3 - this technology was added to the new design to result in the CompM4. The resulting CompM4 had a high battery and adjuster housing that was great for use with thick gloves, but which was somewhat vulnerable. The US Army specified a low mounted battery housing for a replacement, the CompM4S, of which they promptly ordered over 500,000 as their new M68 CCO.

However, the US Army wasn't content with one aspect of the CompM4s - it's weight. Hauling gear around the mountains of Afghanistan, soldiers who ten years ago would have been trying to cut weight by pounds were now talking in ounces. Literally anything that would reduce the load American soldiers were having to pack in the rarified atmosphere would yield huge dividends in reduced fatigue and increased combat effectiveness. As a result, US Army soldiers increasingly started to purchase their own Aimpoint Micro T-1 red dot sights. At 3.7 ounces inclusive of thumbscrew operated Picatinny rail mount, and incredibly rugged, the Aimpoint Micro T-1 was the ideal choice. This mount is often substituted for the LaRue LT660, a locking quick detachable, unit that lifts the red dot sight into alignment with in-service night vision systems and is ideal for co-witnessing.

Recent photographs from Afghanistan show the Aimpoint Micro T-1 in un use with the Aimpoint 3xMag magnifier on the unique Aimpoint TwistMount, sometimes with the optional TwistMount Co-witnessing Spacer which puts the Aimpoint magnifier at the correct height for the Micro T1 when used with the LT660 quick release mount. Although the 4 MOA (actually 3.8 MOA) red dot can be a bit of a disadvantage at longer ranges, this combination saves a lot of weight over the combination of a CompM4 and an M150 ACOG. This unit has an advantage over ACOGs with piggy backed red dots that cannot be used through inline night vision and the T-1 + magnifier combination is easily co-witnessed. The T-1 also makes an ideal back-up sight for rifles and other weapons fitted with powerful optics. For a sniper or designated marksman, the ability to instantly engage close range targets can be vital. Now, should an enemy pop up thirty metres away, all he or she has to do is tilt the rifle 45 degrees and take the shot using his offset mounted Micro T1. Although the Micro T1 red dot sight was intended for law enforcement, hunting and action shooting, it was built to military specs and it seems inevitable that the US Military will standardise it and the 3xMag magnfier in the near future.
