Obama Cyber Czar Melissa Hathaway, Resigns, Leaving Government Networks Exposed
What do China, North Korea and Russian hackers have in common? They have been in our government computer networks and sensitive power grid computer systems. They were so bold, they left evidence the last time they visited. In April of this year someone planted software that would make their access and control of these grids easier. Of course China admittedly denies these rumors.
How are they doing it? The utilities are connected to their sub stations with either private or public networks. Companies and utilities use private networks like VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) to create encrypted tunnels to supply data to control stations and corporate offices. A hacker circumvents this security by cracking the encryption on the VPN or a brute username/password attack. Once in the VPN, the hacker has free run of the companies computers as if he or she was actually inside the corporate data center. Since many utility grid and nuclear stations are controlled by software, the hacker can work their way towards shutting down sections of the power grid. Shutting down sections of the grid probably requires another level of usernames and passwords, but that is nothing more than a little extra patients needed by the hacker. This same scenario applies to federal government computer systems.
Hacker Gary McKinnon from the UK is going to stand trial in the United States, charged with hacking into 97 top-secret military computers and causing more than $700,000 damage. He was caught, but there is evidence he shared the data across the internet with other hackers who have covered their trail.
Two months ago, President Obama, declared that it was time for the country to have one official to oversee government and internet security. Welcome the Obama Cyber Czar.
This Cyber Czar was to be Melissa Hathaway, who was also George Bushes Cyber security aid, but she resigned her position this past week, leaving the Obama Cyber security project on hold. One month after Obama announced the Czar position, North Korean hackers launched multiple attacks on US Government Defense and South Korean computer networks.
