NHL Players By Nationality
I was watching a game with a buddy recently and we got to talking about how many Russians were playing in the NHL right now, because it seems like there aren't as many as there used to be. So I thought I'd break down the numbers pertaining to NHL players today and where they come from. These numbers are from today and based on the teams' active rosters.
Lithuania, Norway, Italy, Kazakstan, Slovenia and Poland all have one current NHL player. Belarus, Latvia and Switzerland have 3 each. Ukraine and Denmark both have 4. Germany has 9, Slovakia 11, Russia 22, Finland 27, Czech Republic 41, Sweden 46, USA 151 and Canada has 397.
So based on these numbers, just under 55% percent of NHL players are Canadian, almost 21% are American and the rest of the countries put together represent approximately 24% of the players. Using current population numbers we can say that 0.00001164% of Canadians play in the NHL, while 0.00000049% of Americans are NHL players and 0.00000507% of Swedes.
Since Canada has the most NHL players and the highest percentage of its citizens playing in the NHL, I decided to break down the numbers according province. From least to most….the Territories currently have no players, New Brunswick has 2, Prince Edward Island 3, Newfoundland 5, Nova Scotia 6, Manitoba 21 British Columbia 40, Saskatchewan 44, Quebec 53, Alberta 63 and Ontario 157. Again, using current population statistics, Ontario has 0.00001189% of their population playing in the NHL and Saskatchewan is the highest 0.00003143%.
It's no surprise that Canada supplies more hockey players to the NHL than any other country, but I thought it was interesting to break down the numbers,
