Caviar - The Way to a Russian Girls Heart
Whether you plan on making the trek east to meet Russian women or you're already dating a Russian woman, there is something you ought to know. Russian women have a soft spot in their heart for caviar. It is ingrained in the Russian culture. For the past 2000 years, Russian women and men have been toasting to life with glasses brimming with chilled vodka and dishes lined with black pearls of caviar. Once reserved solely for Russian czars, black caviar, as it is colloquially known, is every bit a tradition as it is an indulgence.
Basically, caviar is salted roe, or unfertilized fish eggs, harvested from wild sturgeon fished from the Caspian and Black Seas. An ounce of this delicacy could very well set you back a $100, depending on the variety. That's nearly three times the price of silver, but why oh why is a tiny tin of fish eggs so expensive? Well, if you have to ask, you have probably never tried it.
There are four varieties of caviar you simply must try in this lifetime:
- Beluga - these soft, almost translucent gray orbs tend to be the most expensive fare.
- Sterlet - the most nutritious of the lot, these small golden eggs are rich in Omega 3s and nearly extinct unfortunately.
- Ossetra - a firmer textured roe with a nutty flavor ranging in colors from warm browns to golden yellows.
- Sevruga - a smaller yet more flavorful roe due to its higher salt content.
Because of over fishing and pollution, the sturgeon has been put on the endangered species list, which has all but ceased the production of black caviar; however, there are alternatives. Red caviar, or salmon eggs, is widely popular among Russian women and men. You get the nutrition and flavor of black caviar minus the hefty price tag. There is also caviar derived from whitefish, herring, Alaskan Pollack and even tuna to name a few. When dating a Russian, it is important to remember that a little class and worldly knowledge can go a long way. If you really want to impress Russian women, simply being able to splurge on luxuries like black caviar won't necessarily inspire Cupid's arrow. There's still a matter of etiquette. If you really want to impress Russian women, here's a few rules of thumb to keep in mind:
- Leave the silverware in the cupboard. It will only spoil the caviar with its metallic taste.
- Caviar is best served over ice on petri-like dishes and is best complimented with plain-tasting sides like egg whites, buttered toast and unsalted crackers.
- It's all about moderation. Shoveling spoonfuls of caviar down your gullet is not only expensive but Russian women consider it to be tacky.
There you have it. Keep these caviar caveats in your breast pocket. When next you happen to meet Russian women in just the right social setting, you'll be glad you did.
