Russian Jews
We all know Hitler killed 6 million Jews. Did historians record how many Russian Jews Josef Stalin massacred?
It has not been able to be determined due to the inability in knowing how many Jews were remaining in the Soviet Union pre/post Nazi invasion, nor the willingness to look into it since it can all be easily blamed on the Nazis.
Objectively speaking, Russia had about 3 million Jews before the war began in 1939. To this number was added a significant portion of Polish Jews after the Soviet-Nazi partition in winter 39. Considering Poland had around 3 million Jews and many would have left towards the east at the time of the Nazi invasion it is fair to say that another 1.5 to 2 million Polish Jews can be added to the Soviet number. Making it 4.5 to 5 million.
Between winter 39 to summer 41, these Jews were under Soviet rule. Many who could would try to leave, others tried to join Soviet society, and others were rounded up along with the Soviet citizens who Stalin purged.
Once the Nazis came in it is estimated that they were responsible for the deaths of about 2 million in occupied Russia. What we know is that almost all 3 million Polish Jews perished, what we assume is that they were all killed by the Nazis along with a large part of Russian Jews.
This is most likely not accurate since during those times during the Nazi-Soviet pact, many Poles, Jew and non-Jew, were killed by the Soviets. Most likely at least 1 million Jews killed can be attributed to the Soviets rather than the Nazis. On top of that would be all the Jews outside of German occupied territory in the Soviet Union that were still killed or sent to gulags.
