I started using kettlebells in 2007 because I wanted a change. My barbell and dumbbell routines had gotten a little stale and I was starting to experience diminishing returns. I was still having a good time, but it wasn't as fun as when I was steadily seeing positive changes in my body. How could it be?

While I was at the library one day, I saw a book about bodyweight conditioning--The Naked Warrior by Pavel Tsatsouline. I grabbed it because it looked interesting. And it was, but I wasn't particularly interested in bodyweight drills. But in the back of that book was an ad for Russian kettlebells. I'd never heard of them. I was interested enough to go to a Play it Again Sports and buy one.

The exercises were very different than anything I had ever experienced. When you buy a bodybuilding magazine, you will almost certainly see a bunch of programs that say bench press, do a lot of bicep curls, and squat. That's all fine and good when you have a bar you can stack a bunch of plates on, but how do you go about building muscle with kettlebells? How do you apply what you have learned with "traditional" fitness literature to those odd movements you have never performed? How do you know you're doing it right?

Easy! Just let someone else do the trial and error for you. Like me.

After a couple of years, I have had some great results, but not without some tinkering. I have found a solution that will not be a huge revelation for anyone who has been strength training for very long, but it took me a while to apply it to kettlebells, so maybe someone else will get something else out of this.

The solution is to use two kettlebells instead of one. Every movement can be doubled by place a bell in the other hand. More total weight lifted equals more muscle, it's just a fact. I have personally experienced the greatest gains by doing high-rep sets of double kettlebell deadlifts, but the long cycle clean and jerk is not far behind.

If you are new to these odd Russian tools, I recommend finding a certified trainer to help you develop good habits. But if muscle is your goal and you're not sure how to proceed with your new fitness toy, just remember: more weight equals more muscle, and using two kettlebells is the easiest way to lift more weight in a hurry.

Keep it fun and you'll make progress that will blow you away. I've been there. I'm still there! And I owe a lot of it to the Russian kettlebell: brutal, effective, and best of all, enjoyable.
