SOME GROUND RULES OF REGIFTING
The old adage that it’s better to give than to receive may be true… except when you put an unwanted item back into circulation and get caught!
Recycling unwanted gifts or ‘regifting’ isn’t something that many people admit to, but the research tells a different story. Over 50% of us do it. But it’s not about passing the parcel – there’s much more to it. Regifting is fine as long as it’s above board.
So what are the rules of regifting?.
Regifting shatters the notion that people should always give gifts that they’d like to receive themselves. And if you’re uncomfortable with the whole idea of recycling, rather come clean. All you have to say is : “Here’s something that I can’t use/don’t need/have already/etc, perhaps you’d like it or perhaps you know someone else who might” – simple as that.
But if you’re a regifter, here are some groundrules. Ultimately, the aim is not to get caught, so here’s how to avoid being discovered..
New does NOT mean ‘pre-loved’ – no matter how tenderly!. It’s got to be untouched and untried – otherwise it’s yours! Triple check for even the tiniest hint of ‘pre-love’ – which includes old sticky tape, receipts hidden at the bottom of the packaging, old gift tags, inscriptions, fingerprints, dust, stains, broken seals, scratches or damaged packaging. Remove all hints of a past. It’s either new in its original packaging or it can be given away – simple as that.
And talking of wrapping – original giftwrap can be recycled …but only into the environmental bin! Gob-stopping presentation always makes a gift even more desirable and exciting, so make it count with stunning new gift paper accessorized with ribbons or else a giftbox.
Check the heritage of the gift – know where it comes from. A dead giveaway of a regift would be a souvenir from a place you’ve never been to or a memento from some sporting event on a distant continent Items from foreign shops are also no-gos.
If you’re thinking of giving perishables – check the sell-by date. Gourmet gifts are great, but check the expiry date on the chocolates, candy, preserves etc. And remember, short is not sweet when it comes to the expiry time. Six months to expiry is the very barest minimum. The same principle applies to fashion items, accessories and appliances. The second round is out if an item is out of fashion, out of style, outdated technology or has been replaced by a newer model.
Never pass on gift vouchers – and definitely not partly used ones!. Imagine getting a card with a balance of $36.29 – surely an insult?!. And as gift vouchers are also generally only valid for a certain period of time, it’s really off limits to pass something on that expires shortly..
Freebies should retain their original purpose ie. They’re freebies!. They don’t need a second life. And this goes for everything and anything with corporate branding on it – even if it is the coolest gadget from the tradefair!.
And if you’ve passing on a book that you may have been given but have already read, just do a little extra reading to make sure there’s no message written on the inside pages.
You shouldn’t even think about recycling anything that’s made by hand, crafty-type items or one-of-a-kind things. Those should be happily received by your local charity shop or homeless shelter and not by your best friend.
Keeping a record of the paper trail is also a good idea, especially when it comes to significant events such as 40th birthday gifts, wedding and anniversary gifts etc. Make lists, use post-it notes or jot it down in your diary – and always keep some social distance between the original source and the new owner.
And finally – there’s nothing to be guilty about – giving is a joy. But if you’ve run out of options for men gift ideas or gifts for women, you may want to consider gift certificates – these are available for a vast range of activities from leisure pursuits such as yacht cruises, wine tours and cooking classes to high octane adventures like skydiving, kayaking, white water rafting and horse riding. And it’s highly unlikely that anyone getting one of those would even consider putting it back into circulation.
