how did the breakdown of the Roman empire lead to the creation of medieval Europe?
With wave after wave of "barbarians" invading a declining Western Roman Empire, the Roman army was stretched way past its endurance. The Roman government finally told the people that they were on their own. Most of the wealthy Romans had estates or manors in the countryside and had fled to them to avoid the invaders. The peasants started making their ways toward them. In return for protection provided by the estate owners (the lords) they promised to work for them in whatever capacity was needed including serving in the lord's army (knights) ... the beginning of medieval society. Instead of owing allegiance to a government it was now owed to a person, the lord of the manor.
