Italian Docg List
Wine Connoisseurs, help!!- Red wine similar to White Zinfandel??
I'm going to an Italian restaurant for dinner. I would like to try a red wine, but am very hesitant. I most often of the white wines drink White Zinfandel. Of the red wine list choices from the menu I pasted below, is there anything similar?
Light to Medium-bodied:
Merlot, Ecco Domani, Italy
Pinot Noir, Francis Coppola
Pinot Noir, Estancia Pinnacles
Sangiovese-Merlot-Cabernet blend, Banfi Centine, Italy
Merlot, Blackstone
Chianti, Gabbiano, DOCG, Italy
Medium to Full-bodied:
Cabernet Sauvignon, Copperidge
Cabernet Sauvignon, Mondavi Woodbridge
Chianti Riserva, Ducarosso, Italy
Zinfandel, Ravenswood, Vintners Blend
Syrah, Trapiche
Merlot, Clos du Bois
Alexander Valley Reserve
Chianti Classico Riserva, Banfi, Italy
Full-bodied:
Super Tuscan, Pian di Nova, Italy
Cabernet Sauvignon, J. Lohr “Seven Oaks”
Cabernet Sauvignon, Folie à Deux
Claret, Francis Coppola
White Zin is usually classified as a rose, and that is very sweet. Jumping to a red is going to be an awakening.
I don't see it on the wine list, but I would recommend a Gamay Beaujolais (sp?).
On the list above I would say go with one of the two Pinot Noirs. I don't know the Estancia specifically, but the others I know are very nice. The Coppola Pinot is nice and enjoyable.
On a side note, that is a nice looking wine list. If you really get stuck a cool bartender or wine steward will help you out.
