Islamic Zakat System

God asks for money?
Ok I am asking a question because I am not sure, please clear this up for me. Zakat is a pillar of Islam, am I right in saying this is too give money to the poor or an Islamic related trust etc. How can it be a pillar to give money, something that man has created as a system of trade?
So what is Zakat, wealth as in posession? Shukren and Salaam
I guess I should highlight that what I mean is how can God ask for us to give something physical like money which is man made
