With a rich and beautiful past and an extremely favourable climate, Egypt holidays are understandably popular. While Egypt is well equipped for tourists, what should not be overlooked are the cultural expectations and customs of this Islamic country, and one should be sure to adhere to these. You might just be booking Dahab holidays on the beach, but one should not forget to consider, and respect, the local customs. While it is acceptable for holidaymakers to wear shorts and swimwear at the beaches and within the popular resorts such as Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada, elsewhere visitors are expected to dress more modestly. Ladies should refrain from wearing short skirts, or having their arms and shoulders bare – a pashmina or kaftan is an easy and stylish solution to this. Similarly, men should have their shoulders and chests covered and wear long shorts or trousers. The mosque is a deeply religious place to Egyptians, so be sure to follow all rules in regards to dress, including removing your shoes, and not baring much flesh.
Sharm el Sheikh is known for its great nightlife, and there are plenty of clubs and bars abound. When enjoying this thriving nightlife however, it is important to consider that alcohol is forbidden by many Muslims. Alcohol is freely available, especially in tourist-populated areas, but try not to behave in a disrespectful manner when drinking on your Hurghada holidays and certainly do not flaunt it.
In addition, during the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims are traditionally only permitted to work six hours per day, shops and businesses operate noticeably reduced hours. Ramadan sees all Muslims go without food or water between sunrise and dusk. While holidaymakers are certainly not expected to follow suit, it’s simply good manners to ensure you don’t flaunt your meals, or eat, drink or smoke in public places, where locals will be fasting.
