Sexuality in Islam - Part Three

Hasan A. Yahya, Ph.Ds

This is the third part of sexuality on Islam and discusses the difference practices of “Polygyny and Polygamy in Islam. Since polygamy is defined as: "the practice of having two or more wives or husbands at the same time." Therefore In Islam there is polynyny which is defined as: "a practice of having two or more wives at the same time.” (webster’s New Dictionary)

Polygyny was practiced with no limitation, in a almost all cultures beside Islamic culture. Various religions old and new approved of it and practiced it before and after Islam. Several of the Prophets, mentioned in the Torah and the Bible, had more than one wife. For example, Abraham, Solomon, and David, Even today polgymy is being secretly practiced in the United States, by at least 30,000 followers of Mormons faith. However, it is not a secret that polygyny is taking another sort and being practiced in North America, Asia and Europe in what is known as having a mistress or mistresses.

Unlike polygyny in Islam, In non- Muslim cultures, males who have more than a girl-friend or mistress have no legal obligations or responsibilities toward their girl-friends or mistresses, being second, third or sixth. Or toward their children. In Islam, however, a Muslim husband has complete legal obligations and responsibilities toward his second, third, or fourth wife as well as their children.

Muslim scholars and legal sheikhs have no doubt that women as a second or third wife have the right legally acknowledged in the court system. A situation in Islamic belief is much better off than a mistress (or girl-friend in Europe and the USA, after feminine movement in the past century or before.) In both wanted or unwanted children out of marriage contract (illegal children-from girl-friends or mistresses) are far worse (legally speaking) from the children produced under Islamic legal system of polygyny where the father has all the rights and privileges of a illegitimate son or daughter.
