Gravy Recipes - The Finishing Touch To Dinner

Even though gravy recipes are usually associated with roast meats, and especially beef, chicken or turkey, there are in fact a lot of types of gravy you might be unfamiliar with and a lot of ways to serve it.

Gravy is served often in many households and it is cheap to make as well as delicious. A lot of gravy recipes are made by combining the juices from the poultry or meat you have roasted with some butter, flour, and seasonings. You can also get gravy mixes in boxes but why would you spoil the taste of a carefully cooked roast dinner by pouring one of those over it? Boxed gravy mixes are packed with chemicals and additives. Learning a bit about gravy recipes means you can make a wonderful gravy to enhance your dinner.

Some Different Kinds of Gravy Recipes

Most people are unaware just how many kinds of gravy there are. If you are a fan of southern cuisine, for instance, you might know about biscuits and gravy. A lot of people are unfamiliar with this dish and only know the darker gravies, like onion gravy or classic brown gravy.

Maybe your grandmother or mother used to prepare this tasty meal for you. Homemade biscuits and gravy make a wonderful snack and it is possible to make this meal from scratch in fifteen or twenty minutes, including baking time. The type of gravy served over biscuits is usually creamy and white and can feature pieces of sausage or crispy bacon.

Gravy served with meat is usually made with the juices from the meat, whether you are using beef, pork, lamb or something else. These gravies tend to be dark and richly flavored. Sometimes flavorings such as port wine, fresh herbs, spices, garlic and other seasonings are added, to give the gravy recipe more flavor.

Even More Gravy Ideas

The word gravy means different things in different cultures. For example, in some Asian countries, the word refers to any sauce served with a dish, regardless of whether it is made with meat juices or not.

Indian vegetables in gravy might be a familiar dish in India but a lot of Indian households would not have any idea what a biscuits and gravy recipe is, just because the cuisines between the two cultures are so different. An Indian gravy might be based on tomatoes or broth and does not bear much resemblance to our beef or chicken gravy recipes.

Another use of the word gravy refers to sweet dishes rather than savory ones. Perhaps you have tried chocolate cake with chocolate gravy. The gravy recipe in this case would be more of a chocolate sauce than a gravy but the word can still be used for this chocolate, sugar and milk confection. Sweet gravies are really delicious and especially popular with kids.

To add both moisture and flavor to a dish, try a homemade gravy recipe. If you are serving something like pork chops, mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables or burgers, which need a little extra something, consider making a homemade gravy recipe. Food does not have to be boring or dried out to deserve the addition of gravy but, since there are gravy recipes suited to every dish, why not impress your family by making one, to give the dish more appeal and flavor?
