Holy Peace

Why do most religions preach peace and brotherhood, and yet wage holy wars or purges?
It seems backward that those who preach one thing often do the opposite. Think: The Crusades, The Inquisition, Jihad, etc.
Because people like to put their own religion on others. "If you don't follow, you die" was what was going on in the Crusades and the Inquisition. People also used their religion for their own profits. It was used to unify countries to start a war against another country, for land, money, resources. So if you think about it, its people who really start wars, not just the religions. Though religion is the spark that starts the fire.
