An Overview Of The Cholesterol Ratio

From the Greek chole, which means bile, and stereos, meaning solids comes the word. A brief look at the cholesterol ratio is better understood when considering these levels. Levels are represented in milligrams per deciliter which is one tenth of a liter or 3.3 fluid ounces. An acceptable level of 200 mg/dL is the normal for most people. However, doctors may desire a lower level based on the patients medical history.

There are two types, HDL and LDL make up the values physicians focus on. The HDL which is considered good and the LDL which is considered the bad. The HDL otherwise known as high-density lipoproteins in a woman range from 50 mg/dL to 60. In men, the levels are slightly lower. 40 mg/dL to 50 mg/dL seem to be the appropriate range. The lower the HDL levels the more favorable conditions are. Daily exercise for 30-60 minutes daily and no tobacco use have been known to maintain lower levels.

LDL, low-density lipoproteins (the bad) is a major concern of most physicians. 100 mg/dL is considered an optimum level. The lower the level the lower your risk of heart disease.

Calculating these ratios depends on the favored method of the primary care physician or technician. Some use the ratio of calculating the HDL level by dividing it into the total cholesterol. A level of 150 mg/dL and an HDL level of 50 would be a 5-to-1 ratio.

Using the absolute numbers of the total blood cholesterol as well as the HDL is another method. Some physicians prefer this method as it aids in determining the course of treatment for the patient.

The nature of this vital substance is to travel. However because it will not mix with water. The HDL assists must in its function as it travels through the bloodstream. HDL is able to carry packets to the liver and remove it from the body.

An LDL leaves deposits on the walls of vessels as it carries through the bloodstream. As a result, plaque may accumulate, narrowing the vessel. This increases the chance of heart disease.

Not a bad thing by any means, it is produced in all animals including humans. It is responsible for the production of hormones, bile acid, and vitamin D. It is also a vital structural component of mammalian cell membranes, keeping our cells fluid and strong.

Maintaining a healthy diet with low saturated fat intake and additional fiber may help. An exercise program is also a benefit in reducing high levels. Consulting with a primary care physician for a brief look at the cholesterol ratios and levels can be insightful.
