Colleges And Communities Benefit From Grants

Public and private agencies grant money, or award grants, to colleges and universities for a variety of efforts. Students interested in grants can research “online college grants”. During the second half of 2010, Portland State University alone received some $9 million in grants. The grant money is to help the Oregon institution conduct research, offer fellowships, and expand academic offerings and more.

With a $340,000 grant from the National Cancer Institute, a Portland university researcher is to study how early communications between cancer patients and their surgeons might be related to their quality of life and chances for survival, according to an announcement of the grant in November. The Associate Professor of Communication at this college, Jeffrey Robinson, who was provided the grant, suggested in the announcement that this communication sets the tone for a patient's treatment and recovery. The goal of the research is to provide surgeons and patients with an education about how they can communicate in ways that can affect a patient's health and attitude for the better, the announcement noted.

With Catholic Charities and Impact NW, a Regional Research Institute at this Portland institution received a $325,000 grant from the Portland Children's Levy. Representatives of these agencies plan to put the city-created Levy's Leverage Fund Collaboration grant toward services targeting mothers at risk of becoming homeless. With the grant money, the regional research Institute at this college, Catholic Charities and Impact NW would work in part to teach coping skills to some 30 women, an October announcement from the university noted. Another way students are getting through college has to do with “online grants”.

Adults considered to be at risk in a digital divide might benefit as a result of another grant that was provided to this college. This particular grant, for $3.3 million, came from the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration. The grant money would help the university pay for an educational effort that would span six states, an announcement from the university suggested. With help from another grant – this one at $1.6 million – a Middle East Studies Center at this Portland college is to hire new instructors, hold more cultural events and activities and expand its library collection. These efforts, along with outreach activities for those in grades K-12, would be designed to help the center expand its reach, according to an announcement from that college. New instructors at the center would teach Geography, Arabic and Islamic Studies, the announcement noted, and scholarships offered with help from another $156,000 federal grant would be provided to students who participate in Middle East studies.

Doctoral students in an environmental program, on the other hand, are to reap the rewards of a five-year, $3 million grant that the National Science Foundation provided to this college in Portland. About 30 individuals are to be named IGERT fellows, participating beginning in 2011 in an Ecosystem Services for Urbanizing Regions program, a university grant announcement noted. As part of these fellowships, the graduate students are to study how the environment becomes affected when urban areas grow, according to the announcement noted.

With a $250,000 grant from E. John Rumpakis, this Portland school plans to establish a Hellenic Studies program, according to a June announcement. The Hellenic Studies program is to include courses in history, language, culture and current affairs as well as study abroad and internship opportunities, lectures and performances, the announcement noted. They plan, down the road, to establish a Hellenic Studies major and certificate program.

The students at this university aren't the only individuals to benefit from grants that the institution received during the second half of 2010. Public and private grants provided to the university are to also help individuals in the community, including those who rely on health care services. Students who do attend this college, however, might stand a better chance of success in their studies as a result of grants that also provide for a wider variety of studies from which to choose. Through their school or at home, students can find more information about “online college grants”.
