Why does France have such a large nuclear arsenal?

France has an arsenal of several hundred nuclear warheads deployed in planes, submarines, and on land. They have done over 200 nuclear weapons tests since the 1960's. France also helped Israel build its own nuclear arsenal in the 1970's as part of a joint nuclear technology development effort.
But why does France need so many nukes? Who would possibly attack France in this day and age? Germany has no nukes, so they aren't any kind of threat. England has nukes, but France and England have a friendly relationship.
I mean, it costs a lot of money for France to maintain and upgrade this large nuclear arsenal; what's the point?
France is a powerful country with a long history of a strong military, americans don't take them seriously but if it weren't for the french, the US wouldn't exist as it does today, 90% of british troops were fighting france in europe at the time of the revolution, add that to the troops and weapons the French sent to american, and you will see that you wouldn't be alive if it weren't for the french, France deploys a lot of troops all over the world, even today, America can not be the only country to interfere in the affairs of distant lands
