British Dance: A Brief History

For many years the likes of France, Italy, Russia and even Sweden refined and embellished ballet, while British dancers were mostly confined to folk dance and musical revues. The first ballet companies in the UK were founded by two remarkable women in the 1930's, which changed this.

Coming out of the famous Ballets Russes under Serge Diaghilev, were Ninette de Valois and Marie Rambert. The pair encouraged the first home-grown choreographers and launched small companies of star dancers in London. Frederick Ashton was among these and went on to become one of the best choreographers in the world.

Ballet was established on a national, subsidised footing, meaning there was a swift growth. Stars such as Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev were prominent in the 1960's, as the Royal Ballet was considered the world’s greatest company. Ashton’s La Fille mal gardée and Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet, as well as other major new narrative ballets were performed at the world’s top companies.

Innovations in contemporary choreography were generated by Marie Rambert in her company Ballet Rambert. In the 1960's American modern choreographers such as Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham came to London, bringing with them a new injection of inspiration. Pop music was put into choreography in the 1980s with new dance stars such as Christopher Bruce and Michael Clark working with the likes of the Rolling Stones and The Fall.

The face of contemporary dance has been changed once again, thanks to the recent popularity of hip hop and the rise in TV dance talent shows. Rappers and DJs have been brought into the dance scene, and have inspired a host of street dance classes up and down the country. The UK contemporary dance scene is in a constant state of change and development, while classical ballet has never been more popular in Britain.

The Tale of Despereaux

The Tale of Despereaux

The Tale of Despereaux looks a little like Shrek. The storytelling and animation draw on everything from Ratatouille and classic fairytales to Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift, Indiana Jones, and, in its action sequences, even Bourne and Bond. But this movie stands on its own; too dark and violent for very young children, perhaps, but for the most part it’s exciting and funny, and it delivers a m...
