An Outstanding American Collage Artist Known As Robert Rauschenberg
The American collage artist and printmaker Robert Rauschenberg played around freely with avant-garde concepts and methods. His wild inventiveness and frank eclecticism were tempered by his nearly unerring good sense of color and design. In 1947, while in the U.S. Marines he found out his own aptitude for drawing and interest in the artistic manifestation of everyday items and individuals. Soon after departing the Marine Corps, he studied paintings in Paris, France. In less than a twelve monts he moved to North Carolina, in which the country’s most visionary artists have been teaching at Black Mountain College. Rauschenberg undertook studies under Josef Albers, who stressed design as a discipline, and Rauschenberg felt he needed such training. Rauschenberg mentioned that Albers has been the teacher most important to his growth. There Rauschenberg began what ended up being an artistic movement. Soon, North Carolina country life would seem small and he left for New York to make it as a painter. Despite the mayhem and pleasure of city lifestyle Rauschenberg came to the realization the full degree of just what he could bring to painting.
Rauschenberg’s enthusiasm for popular culture and his denial of the tension and seriousness of the Abstract Expressionists guided him to look for an alternative way of mixed media painting. He found his unique mode by embracing materials traditionally not within the artist’s reach. About 1950 Rauschenberg started to paint his all-white, and then all-black, paintings. From these ascetic activities in total minimalism he turned into creating huge, richly distinctive and shaded collage-assemblages. By 1958, at the time of his very first solo exhibition, his work had shifted right from abstract artwork to drawings to what he classified as “combines.” These combines intended to express {both the} discovering and forming of combinations in three-dimensional collage, which cemented his place in art history.
His best-known and most audacious combines are the “Bed” and “Monogram”. About his artwork Rauschenberg said: "{Painting} relates to both art and existence which he tried to act in the space involving the two." This pioneering changed the course of contemporary art. The idea of merging and of recognizing mixtures of objects and images has remained at the core of Rauschenberg’s work. As Pop Art blossomed in the ’60s, he turned away from three-dimensional combines and began to work in {two} dimensions, using magazine images of recent incidents to produce silk-screen prints.
In 1958, he had an exhibition in New York City that catapulted him to prominence, and his paintings quickly got into the collections of every single major art gallery in the United States and abroad. Not satisfied with cultivating his career as a painter, in 1963 he toured with the Merce Cunningham Dance Theater as an active player. In 1964 Rauschenberg got first prize at the Venice Biennale. In the the later part of 1960s he focused on developing series of silk-screen prints as well as lithographs.
From the middle of sixties through the seventies, this collage artist continued the experimentation in prints by printing onto aluminum, transferring plexiglass disks, clothes, as well as other materials. He challenged the view of the artist by assembling engineers to help in the production of parts technologically designed to incorporate the viewer as an active participant in the work. During the late 1980s, he created the Rauschenberg Overseas Cultural Exchange which was established to broaden cultural ties. In every single county he visited, he would create artwork and leave one piece behind. Rauschenberg continued his experimentation, concentrating primarily on collage and new ways to transfer photographs. In 1994, the World Federation of United Nations Associations chose his painting to appear on a stamp. In 1998, The Guggenheim Museum put together its biggest exhibition ever with 400 works by Rauschenberg, highlighting the breadth and appeal of his work.
