2 part theoretical question: If we stopped buying all middle eastern oil...?
Who would be worse off, us having a devastated economy, or the Muslin nations losing all the oil revenue?
(keep in mind, more than 40% of our oil comes from Canada & Mecico, so we would still have oil, just FAR more expensive)
How long would it be in the US before alternate energy solutions became commonplace making oil dependency a thing of the past?
Because of the high demand for oil in China, the effect on Middle East countries economy would be lower prices to the other countries in the short term. Oil is disappearing so the price is just going to go up. The big question in the Middle East is that some point the cost of oil will make other energy sources very cheap and they will lose their market--way before they run out.
I don't know if Canada and Mexico has the ablitiy to pump our complete needs for oil. At some point it will become cheaper to pipe oil from Canada and Mexico than to ship it to us.
How long would it be in the US before alternate energy solutions became commonplace making oil dependency a thing of the past?--this question answer really depends on the Senate and House. If they passed a major tax bill giving companies major tax credits for developing new green energy sources (grassohol, ocean hydroelectric, river hydroelectric) we could be very less dependent in 5 years.
We have been able to accomplished amazing thing when we are focused, look at the dam and bridge projects of the 40's, the electronic advances of the 70's and 80's (lasers and computers), and etc.
