Saint Columbanus - Celtic Missionary

The Celtic missionary, St. Columbanus was born in Leinster, Ireland in 543 A.D. He is also known as St. Columbanus of Bobbio, St. Columba, and St. Columbanus of Luxieul. St. Columbanus began traveling across Europe with 12 companions hoping to establish missionaries where paganism was cropping up. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, St. Columbanus' fellow travelers were "St. Attala, Columbanus the Younger, Cummain, Domgal, Eogain, Eunan, St. Gall Gurgano, Libran, Lua, Sigisbert, and Waldoleno." They began missions in England, Scotland, and France, eventually expanding to Italy.

St. Columbanus remained at the monastery in Annegray for over 20 years. Christian pilgrims traveled to his monasteries because of St. Columbanus' reputation for faith, healing, holy prayer, and church teachings. So many Christians visited St. Columbanus that he sought refuge in caves and forests for quiet meditation and prayer. It was during his time in the forests that he came to love animals and if often pictured with wolves, bears, squirrels, and birds on St. Columbanus jewelry.

Patron Saint Columbanus

St. Columbanus is the patron saint of motorcyclists and against floods.
